This is the Medicine Sand Mandala created entirely from sand by Tibetan monks at the Alys-Stephens Center, the arts center for the Univ. of Alabama at B'ham. It took the monks about 5 days to complete the Mandala. The intricacy and patience involved was truly amazing. Shortly after I took this photo of the completed Mandala, there was a closing ceremony in which the entire Mandala was swept away as a symbol of Impermanence, one of essential doctrines of Buddhism. Attendees of the closing cermony received a small amount of sand as a keepsake, and the rest was ceremonially placed in the Cahaba River.

Medicine Sand Mandala
For now, I'll quickly share my most favorite photo from this school year...so far.
